What's in a pack?

  • A vibrant poster with a big, open question based on a current news story. The questions encourage children to discuss, debate and form opinions. This allows schools opportunities to teach children respect, tolerance and to celebrate differences.
  • A Picture News Paper containing four stories from all around the world. Older children often enjoy accessing and reading these independently. We encourage our schools to engage with us and sometimes our paper includes a report from you!
  • Picture News at Home giving an overview of the story with focus questions for children to discuss with adults at home. This is a great way to strengthen home-school links, engage your communities and develop speaking, listening and vocabulary further.
  • A main assembly, explaining the story in detail, with further open questions and opportunities for discussion and debate.
  • KS1 and KS2 focuses for further exploration at an age-appropriate level.
  • An online area giving you access to past assemblies, an assembly PowerPoint, training, teaching ideas and more!
  • Key vocabulary, video links and website links.

Our children LOVE Picture News assemblies and it has encouraged them to look at the news themselves, ready for us to guess what news story will feature that week. Thank you - keep up the hard work (it makes my Tuesday assembly a breeze!).

The 2022 Welsh Curriculum - Picture News supporting the Four Purposes

Ethical, informed citizens

Expose children to a range of current issues – national and global - including political, religious, cultural, environmental, social, moral, spiritual. Give children opportunities to celebrate diversity, exercise their human and democratic responsibilities and rights, form their own views whilst respecting the views of others.

Healthy, confident individuals

Allow children to develop confidence and resilience. If they want to make a difference to our world, they have to have the confidence to speak out. They must develop resilience. If at first, they do not succeed, develop ideas further, do not give up!

Ambitious, capable learners

Give children opportunities to develop learning further through news stories that inspire them, allowing children to take control, set themselves high standards, ask questions, research then explain and communicate their ideas.

Enterprising, creative contributors

Opportunities are given to allow children to express their ideas and emotions. As the news stories are current, children can use their voice to bring about change. They can give their energy and skills so that other people will benefit.
